Slaying Demons and taking Names

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It would never be better than this. Better than him. Reyes was the apex. It was all downhill from here. He was heaven and hell at once, angel and demon. I wondered how long I could keep him. How long I could call him mine.

I know I probably say this about every freakn Charley Davidson book but fuck it...Best of the friggin series! Charley is just straight up awesome sauce, Reyes was his usual oh so sexy self and I just couldn't put this thing down! Ignored everyone in my house and delved into the world of Charley and the gang!

Last time we saw Charley she was in pretty bad shape, being the victim of torture by the hands of that evil bastard Earl Walker. Now its two months later and she's still licking her wounds, hasn't left her apartment since that horrific day and has become obsessed with....**gasp** the Home Shopping Network of all things. Although she has a case of PTSD she still hasn't lost her sarcastic, and amusing quips. Cause come on....this is Charley we're talking about here!

"You're wrong. I'm not mad at myself. I'm great. I'm full of awesome sauce. Have you seen my ass?"

More drama ensues as we find out that in addition to her PTSD, mixed feelings for the enigmatic Reyes and Daddy issues, the Demons are coming for her. Earl's torture has changed Charlie dramatically, the once fearless vixen has since become terrified. So much so that she's not only become agoraphobic, but is sleep deprived and reeks of fear. Which is tantalizing to the Demons and are taking drastic measures to get her. Of course Reyes is having none of that as he hunts down the bastards responsible one filthy demon at a time.

In addition, Charley is taking on an intersting case, being hired by a girl who believes someone is trying to kill her. No one in her family believes her and this particular case hits home for Charley. The girl, Harper, is being stalked and has been terrorzied her entire life. Harper's bitchy and upitty stepmother harbors resentment toward the poor girl. As Charley investigates she begins to suspect the stepmother as the instigator in her plight.

“See. She is completely unstable. When she finally deigned us with her presence, she said she had been on the run for her life. Of all the ludicrous…” Mrs. Lowell shifted in irritation. “And now she hires a private investigator? She has gone over the edge.” I wrote the word psycho in my notebook, then scribbled it out before she saw. I was letting my own biases guide me on this case, and that would get me nowhere. Taking a mental step back, I took a deep breath and tried to see this from Mrs. Lowell’s perspective, as difficult as that might be. I didn’t often identify with rich bitches, but they were people, too. Weren’t they?

One of the things I loved most about this particular book was the progress of Charley and her sister Gemma. I love that the've reconciled and Gemma plays a big part in this one as she's trying to help Charley heal from her horrid ordeal. There were also some great dialog between the two especially the aftermath of the Maragita party she and Cookie had while trying to get Charley to get some rest.

Have you seen my pants?”

“Speaking of which, how did you get home without them?”

“I borrowed a pair of your sweats. I ran into a convenience store with them on. I talked to neighbors out in their yard when I pulled up. And only after I got inside did I realize they had ‘Exit Only’ written across the back.”

“You stole my favorite sweats?”

“I wanted to die.”

“It’s weird that sweats would make you suicidal. I’d analyze the crap out of that if I were you.”

Charley and Cookie together are a riot! She's the perfect contrast to Charley and her humor and their banter is just priceless! One should always have a friend like Cookie....I just love her!

“So, how was your day?”

“Well, I was in a bank robbery, taken hostage by the Gentlemen Thieves, almost arrested as an accessory, and had one of the most interesting evenings of my life. Speaking of which, did you know the nectar of the gods is in my va-jay-jay?”

It really takes a special person to deal with Charley and her off the wall comments and crazy antics. I swear I'll die when this series has to end....

Now back to the real issue at hand...Reyes! Since our fuckalicous hunk is out of the slammer, he's not only taking down demons and watching Charley in the shadows. Finally in a position to claim his woman, our boys not pulling any punches.

“There is a fine line between love and hate, or haven’t you heard? Sometimes it’s hard to decipher exactly which emotion is strongest.”

I raised my chin. “I don’t love you either.”

He lowered his head and watched me from underneath his dark lashes. “Are you certain? Because the emotion pouring out of you every time I’m near you is certainly not disinterest.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s love.”

“It could be, I promise you. Take off that sweater and give me ten minutes, and you’ll believe beyond a shadow of a doubt you’re in love.”

There are lots of smexy interactions with Charley that just had me panting for more and Charley doesn't stand a chance against his charms. And who does she think she's fooling? She knows she can't resist Reyes...who the hell could or would in any capacity? I know I wouldn't.

“For one week, all I could think about was drinking margaritas--well, that and running my tongue along Reyes's teeth--but I didn't have salt--or Reyes's teeth. I'd also lacked the energy to leave my apartment to get some--or the desire to stoop low enough to beg Reyes to let me lick his teeth after what he did--so I could only wish for a margarita. And dream of Reyes's teeth."

All in all, fanfuckingtastic addition to the series! Losts of action, drama and a sex scene that had me panting like a schoolgirl! If you're a fan of the series, get your asses out there and get this book! It really is the best so far and each book just gets better and better! I am dying to get my hands on
Fifth Grave Past the Light. Charley and Reyes are the epitome of most epic couple eva!!

He turned onto his side, rested his head on an arm, and put a large hand across my belly. With a mischievous grin that transformed his handsome face into that of an angel’s, he asked, “Do you know where the gods keep their nectar?”

I narrowed my eyes in suspicion, and said, “No idea.”

His hand slid down my stomach and between my legs. I sucked in a sharp breath as he leaned in and whispered in my ear, “Let me show you.”

After two more explorations of our stamina, a shared roast beef sandwich, a shower, and another exploration of our stamina, we lay on my bed, entangled in sheets and towels. Reyes wrapped me in his arms and was almost asleep when I said, “Who knew that all this time the nectar of the gods was in my va-jay-jay?”

The unmissable third book in Vina Jackson's red-hot romantic trilogy.

Epic love story, stubborn heroine, stubborn fuckin sexy ass man! Lots of dirty sex, doesn't compare to any I've read...wow! Fifty fans beware....this shit is serious!

If you loved fifty for his demented, roguish ways and can deal with your BDSM stories sans the heavy romance....give this shit a go then! I enjoyed it for the train wreck that is Dominik and Summer. It's intoxicating and raunchy with a touch of romance that just makes it a different and intriguing all the same! I gobbled this series in about a week....can't wait to read the next one!

Fae Love, Mages and Claws...Oh My!

Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Once he had scorched the world.

Once he had driven back overwhelming darkness.

Once he had loved with such passion, his name was legend...

Tairen Soul

Now a thousand years later, a new threat calls him from the Fading Lands, back into the world that had cost him so dearly. Now an ancient, familiar evil is regaining its strength, and a new voice beckons him - more compelling, more seductive, more maddening than any before.

As the power of his most bitter enemy grows and ancient alliances crumble, the wildness in his blood will not be denied. The tairen must claim his truemate and embrace the destiny woven for him in the mists of time.

Loudly, proudly, tairen sing, As they soar on mighty wings. Softly, sadly, mothers cry To sing a tairen’s lullabye.
~The Tairen’s Lament, Fey Nursery Rhyme

To me this book was awesome and I cannot believe Ive waited so feckn long to read it! Ranier scorched the world a thousand years ago, since the evil Eld Mages murdered is e'tan(mate of the heart). Now that he's recovered he soon finds his Shei’tan(truemate or soulmate). Which is unheard of since his Shei'tani is a mortal! War is upon them...Ranier can feel that the once extinct Mages of Eld are emerging and darkness will rein. The fae must do all that they can to prevent them from taking power!

Elysetta Baristoni, of Celeria has never been acecpted in her world! On her way to spinster status her parents are forcing her to marry the disgusting and conniving Den Brodson.

“Den?” Ellie repeated with dismay. Den Brodson, the butcher’s son, was a stuffed pork roast of a young man. And ever since his first wife had died in childbirth six months ago, he’d been following Ellie around like a starving hound on the trail of a juicy steak. He’d made a habit of catching her in dark corners, standing so close she could smell the reek of onions and bacon on him, and looking too intently down the neckline of her dresses as if he could see straight through the fabric to the soft curves beneath. His thick fingers were ever clutching at her arm, as if he had some right to her. She shuddered.

Ely...out of options since Den overpowers her after dinner and places a mark on her, she must marry the twerp! Fortunately for her she inadvertantly calls out to the Fey'Reisen and she soon finds out they she is his truemate or Shei'tani. Upon meeting Rain, she's terrified. He's the one who scorched the world afterall but he also stirs something in her and he becomes her salvation and vice versa.

Beautifully and fearfully wrought, by dread magic splendored, With passion’s fire his soul does burn, in sorrow his name be whispered. —from the epic poem Rainier’s Song by Avian of Celieria.

Now that Ely is promised to the snake of the fucking century, Den Brodson, Ely can't mate to Rain and he is pissed. Since he feels that fey law trumps Celeirian law, Ely is his. Being the last of the Tarien soul left and the only one to have a truemate its imperative that King Dorian and Queen Annora of Celeiria side with him. In addition, the tairen, magical, winged cats of the Fading Lands—had only one fertile female left in their pride, and she grew weaker by the day as she fed her strength to her six unhatched kitlings. According to the Eye of Truth, Ely is their last hope to cure the dying kitlings and save the pride.

I absolutely fell in love with this book! The dialog is beautiful and melodic and the story is fantastic. The characters are so intriguing and I just could not stop reading(or listening), Ha! If you're looking for a great fantasy/paranormal romance that you can sink you're teeth into then by all means, give this a go! You won't be sorry, I'm definitely going to fly through this series and will be doing a reread...thats for damn certain!

Ely starts out as a plain and dutiful daughter with an inner strength that she's at times afraid to show. Her mother is extremely close minded and prejudice against magic and all things fey. Since Ely has magic and is promised to the king of the fey she's in denial about her heritage and her magical abilities. But Rain soon brings her out of her shell and shows her that its ok to use magic and to not be afraid to be herself. Rain becomes enamored of Ely from the beginning and is extremely protective. He really goes to great lengths to see to her safety and most importantly her happiness. I just loved it!!

I loved the beautiful language of the fey and the politics are so intriguing! Really I cannot stress how much I love this book! I think, if you're a fan of fantasy novels and cute and mushy paranormal romances, then you'll just gobble this one up...I know I did! Oh!!! And did I mention that I loved the POV of the villians in the story?? I know for me most books in 3rd person, they drag complete ass with the villian plots and storyline(BDB ::ahem::, sorry Warden but it is what it is), I found myself looking forward to those breaks in the tale and was vastly entertained! Oh and Belliard vel Jelani, Chatokkai: First General. Leader of all Fey armies. He really plays an integral part in Ely's emersion in the world of the fey and she saves him from a lifetime of torment. Once a warrior sees so much war and carnage he becomes desinsitized and numb. Never finding love and fulfillment and inevitably becomes a Dahl'Reisen(lost soul) which is dishonorable amongst the fey or Sheisan’dahlein, the fey honor death. Unknowingly, Ely heals Bel using spirit and he pledges to protect her for all time. He's also Rain's bestfriend and they're banter is funny as hell at times, its really great to see the once reclusive Rainer express his lighter side. Rain has entered uncharted territory, courting a mortal woman in Celeiria is not something that he's well versed at and Rain doesn't do uncertainty well.....

Rain drew in his breath at the sudden rush of feelings that sprang from the simple feel of her skin meeting his. The strength of his connection to this young Celierian went so far beyond what he had felt for Sariel, he could hardly fathom it. She was so young, so incredibly new to the world and to him, and yet regardless of the cost to his soul, Rain would destroy anyone and anything that dared to stand between them. And if any dared to harm her, he would shred them without mercy and dance as he drank their blood. Ellysetta misunderstood the fierce look on his face, because she snatched her hand back and apologized for touching him.

Ellysetta misunderstood the fierce look on his face, because she snatched her hand back and apologized for touching him. “Nei, do not apologize.” Rain could barely restrain himself from reaching for that hand and
putting it back on his skin. His fingers itched to do so, and he clenched them into fists. He craved her touch, ached for it as only a Fey warrior could. But admitting to his need was the same as admitting a weakness, something a Fey rarely did willingly. “I was merely surprised. You may touch me if you like.”

But she didn’t lay that sweet hand upon him again. He cursed his own unguarded reaction that had cost him such a small but much-desired pleasure and wondered how he might contrive to get it back. He bent his head to her, his gaze intent as he willed her to touch him again. To his disgruntlement, she did not. Laughter sounded in his mind. Laughter he recognized but had not heard in any form for centuries. «Bel?» He turned to his old friend in disbelief. Though to most, the solitary Fey would still appear blank as a wall, Rain knew better. Bel’s dark eyes glinted with amusement, and the grim stoicism of his face was less pronounced. There was even the faintest crinkling at the corners of his eyes—humor struggling to find expression. «If you could see yourself, Rain. Pouting like a tzicaida whose lunch just got away.» The corner of Bel’s mouth actually twitched. «You could always just command her to put her hand back on you.»

All in all, Awesome fecking book. Must read!!! Beylah vo C.L. Wilson for creating such an extraordinary world! Ke vo'san!!

My beloved is the sun And I am the earth that thrives only in her warmth. My beloved is the rain And I am the grass that thirsts for her quenching kiss. My beloved is the wind And I am the wings that soar when she fills me with her gentle strength. My beloved is the rock Upon which rests the happiness of all my days. —The Elements of Love, a poem by Aileron v’En Kavali of the Fey-

Review: The Ripple Effect by J.A.Saare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rhiannon's Law #18: No one asks for their life to change, but it does. The bad things we face are tests created to separate the strong from the weak. Once you've found your place--as the savage lion or the tranquil lamb--it's up to you to take the next step, to decide what comes after. Even if it means destroying everything in your path on the road to deliverance.

How is it possible that this series can get better?? With a heroine like Rhiannon Murphy it's inevitable! Since she changed the future in Renfield Syndrome, all is not well in Rhia's world. After Disco's betrayal of her trust and the wild night of passion she shared with Paine still fresh in her mind, Rhiannon must face some hefty consequences. Disco is looking for redemption, his maker is coming to town to force Rhiannon to hand over Sucker(the demon killing blade). Now Rhiannon is beginning to understand that Disco and Paine have sheltered her away from the more dangerous aspects of being in a vampire family.

Its a race against time and if she doesn't hand over Sucker they are all in for a world of hurt! Marius is  not one to be trifled with and neither is they're Demon maker Revenald. She'll soon learn that crossing him will assign her a fate worse than death. And to top it all off, she's made a pact with fallen angel Marigold Vesta. She must restore her to power or Rhiannon will serve as her host.

Rhiannon's Law #28: If you're going to fuck up, be sure to fuck up good and proper. Nothing makes failure acceptable, so you might as well make your misery count.

Basically it's a catch 22. She needs Sucker for protection against her enemies and if she gives it up, she's as good as dead. And if she doesn't give it up to her Master, she'll wish she was dead. Her love life isn't all roses either. Paine is in love with her. Disco wants her back and feels like shit for betraying her the way he did and Rhiannon just can't seem to find it in her heart to forgive him even though she really wants to. But when the time finally comes, will it be too late? And more importantly; Is this Ripple Effect business real....it sure seems like it.

All in all, this was a fantastic addition to the series! It still had its funny flair that I fell in love with and its dark and twisted suspense.

"I've been watching over you."

"Where I'm from, it's the same thing. Stalking isn't cool unless you're an Edward."

The Demons of this world are really some sick bastards that actually gave me nightmares. This series really does have everything that I love; dark humor, steamy sex, betrayal of the worst kind, a heroine I can relate to and can kick major fucking ass! It's definitely one of the best Urban Fantasy series out there. I really hope people stop pirating her work so she can continue this series. It really is an awesome urban fantasy tale thats a love story at heart.

Love didn't come with a guarantee. That's what made it so special, so cherished--so rare. You believed in the truth of your heart, even at its worst, because you had no other choice.

Review: Pure (Covenant #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Pure (Covenant #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"Ever since I've met you, I've wanted to break every rule." Aiden turned away, the muscles in his neck tensing. "You'll become the center of someone's world one day. And he'll be the luckiest son of a bitch on this earth."

*Sigh* Oh, Aiden, I think I love you!

Jennifer L. Armentrout is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I loved Half-Blood and Pure was even better.

There are those that say the Covenant series is a blatant rip-off of the Vampire Academy series. I agree that there are similarities (Half bloods trained to protect Pures. Strong, feisty heroine, etc.) However, Armentrout's writing is so vastly superior that I really don't care. VA fans, please don't hate me ! I was just never a huge fan of the series. Mainly because if I were Rose I would have beat down that annoying idiot Lissa in the first chapter.

Pure starts shortly after where Half Blood ended. Alex is coming to terms with the death of her mother as well as the knowledge that she is the next Apollyon along with Seth.

" So...uh, you're a Team Edward kind of guy?"
Seth snorted. " No, I'm Team James or Team Tyler's Van, but apparently neither of them won by the look of it. She's still alive!"

I fricking love Seth. He holds his own along Alex's smart-ass comments and an increasing affection between the two is more than obvious. A lot of people don't care for love triangles. However, if it's done well I love the additional intrigue. Armentrout does it right. There are no secretly evil love interests. Both men have admirable qualities but are vastly different. With the strict laws governing the Covenant which forbid romantic relationships between Pures and Halfs, Alex must come to terms with her feelings for Aiden and the impossible future between them. Aiden continues his inner battle regarding his love for Alex. As always, he is noble, un-selfish and the voice of reason.

Alex continues to be cranky as hell and have no filter when she's around other people.

"If he says one more word to me I'm going to take a dagger off that wall and shove it in his eye!"

Armentrout creates wonderful dialogue between her characters. Pure ends with an exciting battle between Daemons, Pures, Halfs and Furies and, of course, a cliffhanger that made me love a certain character even more (Hi, Aiden!).

I cannot wait for the next installment, Diety, out in October.

Follow Friday

Every Friday Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read hosts Feature and Follow Friday. One lucky blog is featured and interviewed while the rest of us post our own responses to the question of the week and blog hop to say hello to each other!

This week's question:

Christmas in July! Someone gives you a gift card for two books (whatever that costs). What two books will you buy?

HeatherJay's Answer:

Since this is hypothetical and in my hypothetical mind all of my friends are rich, I will assume this is a REALLY good gift card. Let me preface my first choice by letting y'all know that I'm a total foodie. Unfortunately, I'm a broke-ass foodie so I do not get to partake in my passion as often as I would like. My absolute favorite chef is Thomas Keller. Since I don't have money falling out of my ass I cannot afford to go to his restaurant, The French Laundry, in Napa Valley. I have wanted his cookbook forever and for some reason my friends don't feel like shelling out $500 to let me live my dream so I've always thought buying the $100 cookbook would be a close second.

Second would be to pre-order Gun Metal Magic by Ilona Andrews which comes out next month. It's the first spin-off to the Kate Daniels Series and I'm fricking dying to read it.

There are two releases that Im dying to read but since they come out this winter Ill just hold my GC til then...LOL!

Let's get to 350!!!- 3rd Winner!
