It would never be better than this. Better than him. Reyes was the apex. It was all downhill from here. He was heaven and hell at once, angel and demon. I wondered how long I could keep him. How long I could call him mine.
I know I probably say this about every freakn Charley Davidson book but fuck it...Best of the friggin series! Charley is just straight up awesome sauce, Reyes was his usual oh so sexy self and I just couldn't put this thing down! Ignored everyone in my house and delved into the world of Charley and the gang!
Last time we saw Charley she was in pretty bad shape, being the victim of torture by the hands of that evil bastard Earl Walker. Now its two months later and she's still licking her wounds, hasn't left her apartment since that horrific day and has become obsessed with....**gasp** the Home Shopping Network of all things. Although she has a case of PTSD she still hasn't lost her sarcastic, and amusing quips. Cause come on....this is Charley we're talking about here!
"You're wrong. I'm not mad at myself. I'm great. I'm full of awesome sauce. Have you seen my ass?"
More drama ensues as we find out that in addition to her PTSD, mixed feelings for the enigmatic Reyes and Daddy issues, the Demons are coming for her. Earl's torture has changed Charlie dramatically, the once fearless vixen has since become terrified. So much so that she's not only become agoraphobic, but is sleep deprived and reeks of fear. Which is tantalizing to the Demons and are taking drastic measures to get her. Of course Reyes is having none of that as he hunts down the bastards responsible one filthy demon at a time.
In addition, Charley is taking on an intersting case, being hired by a girl who believes someone is trying to kill her. No one in her family believes her and this particular case hits home for Charley. The girl, Harper, is being stalked and has been terrorzied her entire life. Harper's bitchy and upitty stepmother harbors resentment toward the poor girl. As Charley investigates she begins to suspect the stepmother as the instigator in her plight.
“See. She is completely unstable. When she finally deigned us with her presence, she said she had been on the run for her life. Of all the ludicrous…” Mrs. Lowell shifted in irritation. “And now she hires a private investigator? She has gone over the edge.” I wrote the word psycho in my notebook, then scribbled it out before she saw. I was letting my own biases guide me on this case, and that would get me nowhere. Taking a mental step back, I took a deep breath and tried to see this from Mrs. Lowell’s perspective, as difficult as that might be. I didn’t often identify with rich bitches, but they were people, too. Weren’t they?
One of the things I loved most about this particular book was the progress of Charley and her sister Gemma. I love that the've reconciled and Gemma plays a big part in this one as she's trying to help Charley heal from her horrid ordeal. There were also some great dialog between the two especially the aftermath of the Maragita party she and Cookie had while trying to get Charley to get some rest.
Have you seen my pants?”
“Speaking of which, how did you get home without them?”
“I borrowed a pair of your sweats. I ran into a convenience store with them on. I talked to neighbors out in their yard when I pulled up. And only after I got inside did I realize they had ‘Exit Only’ written across the back.”
“You stole my favorite sweats?”
“I wanted to die.”
“It’s weird that sweats would make you suicidal. I’d analyze the crap out of that if I were you.”
Charley and Cookie together are a riot! She's the perfect contrast to Charley and her humor and their banter is just priceless! One should always have a friend like Cookie....I just love her!
“So, how was your day?”
“Well, I was in a bank robbery, taken hostage by the Gentlemen Thieves, almost arrested as an accessory, and had one of the most interesting evenings of my life. Speaking of which, did you know the nectar of the gods is in my va-jay-jay?”
It really takes a special person to deal with Charley and her off the wall comments and crazy antics. I swear I'll die when this series has to end....
Now back to the real issue at hand...Reyes! Since our fuckalicous hunk is out of the slammer, he's not only taking down demons and watching Charley in the shadows. Finally in a position to claim his woman, our boys not pulling any punches.
“There is a fine line between love and hate, or haven’t you heard? Sometimes it’s hard to decipher exactly which emotion is strongest.”
I raised my chin. “I don’t love you either.”
He lowered his head and watched me from underneath his dark lashes. “Are you certain? Because the emotion pouring out of you every time I’m near you is certainly not disinterest.”
“That doesn’t mean it’s love.”
“It could be, I promise you. Take off that sweater and give me ten minutes, and you’ll believe beyond a shadow of a doubt you’re in love.”
There are lots of smexy interactions with Charley that just had me panting for more and Charley doesn't stand a chance against his charms. And who does she think she's fooling? She knows she can't resist Reyes...who the hell could or would in any capacity? I know I wouldn't.
“For one week, all I could think about was drinking margaritas--well, that and running my tongue along Reyes's teeth--but I didn't have salt--or Reyes's teeth. I'd also lacked the energy to leave my apartment to get some--or the desire to stoop low enough to beg Reyes to let me lick his teeth after what he did--so I could only wish for a margarita. And dream of Reyes's teeth."
All in all, fanfuckingtastic addition to the series! Losts of action, drama and a sex scene that had me panting like a schoolgirl! If you're a fan of the series, get your asses out there and get this book! It really is the best so far and each book just gets better and better! I am dying to get my hands on
Fifth Grave Past the Light. Charley and Reyes are the epitome of most epic couple eva!!
He turned onto his side, rested his head on an arm, and put a large hand across my belly. With a mischievous grin that transformed his handsome face into that of an angel’s, he asked, “Do you know where the gods keep their nectar?”
I narrowed my eyes in suspicion, and said, “No idea.”
His hand slid down my stomach and between my legs. I sucked in a sharp breath as he leaned in and whispered in my ear, “Let me show you.”
After two more explorations of our stamina, a shared roast beef sandwich, a shower, and another exploration of our stamina, we lay on my bed, entangled in sheets and towels. Reyes wrapped me in his arms and was almost asleep when I said, “Who knew that all this time the nectar of the gods was in my va-jay-jay?”
Great review. I have read her YA novel but have yet to read this series. I am added this to my TBR pile.
