I'm excited that there is finally an anticipated book that I don't have to wait forever for. Last summer I was pleasantly surprised after I read the first book in The Hourglass series by Myra McEntire. Plus, it had one of the most kick-ass covers ever.

The story of Emerson Cole and The Hourglass organization continues. Emerson has been plagued her entire life by visions of phantoms and ghosts. Until recently, all believed, including Emerson, that these "visions" were a result of some mental illness yet to be diagnosed. Enter Michael Weaver, hired by her brother to help Emerson through this difficult time and maybe help her rid herself of these delusions which are clearly a figment of her imagination. However, Michael works for a mysterious organization called The Hourglass and he believes everything Emerson says. The story that follows is unique and exciting and I CANNOT WAIT for the follow up, Timepiece ( also, with a kick-ass cover ).

A threat from the past could destroy the future. And the clock is ticking...

Kaleb Ballard's relentless flirting is interrupted when Jack Landers, the man who tried to murder his father, timeslips in and attacks before disappearing just as quickly. But Kaleb has never before been able to see time travelers, unlike many of his friends associated with the mysterious Hourglass organization. Are Kaleb's powers expanding, or is something very wrong?

Then the Hourglass is issued an ultimatum. Either they find Jack and the research he's stolen on the time gene, or time will be altered with devastating results.

Now Kaleb, Emerson, Michael, and the other Hourglass recruits have no choice but to use their unusual powers to find Jack. But where do they even start? And when? And even if they succeed, it may not be enough...

The follow-up to Hourglass, Timepiece blends the paranormal, science fiction, mystery, and suspense genres into a nonstop thrill ride where every second counts.

If you haven't tried this series I encourage you to read Hourglass as it's one of the most interesting books I've picked up in the last year. Ms. McEntire is surely going to follow it up with just as exciting a sequel.

Teaser Tuesday

“What happened to my ginger?  Your eyes are silver, your hair the same.  I heard you tried to kill yourself.”
Paimon squeezed his eyes shut, unable to keep from crying.  “I did not want to live.  I still do not.  I will wake from this and despair again for not having you!”
Furcas nipped his nose.  “Despair not for I am here and you are awake.”
Paimon shook his head.  “Please do not turn this into a nightmare.  Please do not give me hope when none should exist.  This is not possible.” Furcas wrapped his arms around Paimon and held his head.
“I am the Archangel of Hope.  I can do naught else but give that.”
Paimon pressed both hands into Furcas’ chest, pushing and pulling.  “Please do not torture me, figment.”  He inhaled deeply, Furcas’ scent like a drug.  His teeth scraped across Furcas’ neck.  “Do not put me through this again, I cannot lose you twice.” Furcas kissed his cheek.
“But torture you I must.  With pleasure perhaps?”  He kissed Paimon’s chest.  “Something familiar?”  He kissed his stomach.  “Something tangible for proof that I am here?”  He kicked blankets off the bed.  “What will show you?”  He hooked a finger in the waistband of Paimon’s boxers.  “That I am no daydream.”  Furcas tore the cloth off.

That definitely was steamy! This is really a fantastic series I think all fans of Fever or just UF in general will love! There's plenty of action and enough sexy males to make you swoon!!

The Ripple Effect

By J.A. Saare

Expected release Summer 2012

There is always a price to pay…

Rhiannon Murphy visited the future, witnessed hell on earth and made choices to change things for the greater good. Unfortunately there are consequences for her actions, the penalties for her interference possibly more than she can bear. Determined to sever her debt with a fallen angel, she pushes everything aside, focusing on locating Marigold Vesta’s resting place.

Until death comes knocking at her door.

When Disco’s maker arrives in New York, he resents Rhiannon on a level she can’t begin to comprehend. Yet Marius isn’t her most dangerous adversary, not by a long shot. Marius’s sire -- a half-demon -- is determined to see the necromancer who stunned the vampire world on her knees. If she won’t bend, he’ll do everything in his power to make her break. No price is too high, meaning no one is safe -- including Disco and Paine.

Dealt a blow from which she can never recover, Rhiannon turns to the only person who can help her: the fallen angel who is relying on Rhiannon to save her soul. Bartering with a creature from Heaven is probably just as dangerous as starting a war with a demon from Hell, but with nothing to lose it’s no longer about life or death.

It’s about getting even.

The Ripple Effect Excerpt from jasaare.blogspot

Paine moved into my personal space, wrapped his arms around me, and whispered, “Don’t fight me, Rhiannon. Marius is watching.”

Then, he kissed me.

It was a good thing he warned me. Otherwise, I would have fought him.

At least, I think I would have.

Paine’s lips were plush and cool, feathering over mine, just before he opened his mouth and his tongued snaked out. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Fortunately, he didn’t seem to have the same problem. His tongue teased mine, inviting me to play. I followed his lead, kissing him back. The closeness between us brought back memories I wanted to forget, of a different time and place.

He pulled away, and the heat in his gaze made my toes curl. “I’d almost forgotten,” he murmured, licking his lower lip.

“Forgotten?” I asked breathlessly.

“What a woman tastes like.”

More memories arose. He’d said something similar in the future, something that swept aside my reservations. It was impossible not to ache for him—to love him—when I remembered how alone he truly was. That was the reason I didn’t move away from him, why I lifted my hands and placed one on his chest and the other against his face. He closed his eyes and exhaled in bliss, making me feel even worse.

“This isn’t fair to you.”

“Life isn’t fair.” He opened his eyes and looked at me. “We take what we’re given because there isn’t any alternative. Small moments like these can last an eternity.”

He moved away, taking a large step back. I was going to ask him why when I glanced at the door. Disco stood in the entranceway with Marius at his side. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, since his maker undoubtedly had him on his best behavior. Still, I did notice the way his lips thinned and his jaw ticced as he regarded us.

“Marius and I are meeting with the leaders of the other families.” Disco took slow, deliberate steps in my direction. “I wanted to see you before we left.”

This time, Disco was the one invading my personal space, wrapping his arms so tightly around me I held my breath, bringing me toward his chest. One large hand cradled the back of my head, arching my neck so he had access to my lips. His kiss was harsher than Paine’s, more demanding. He didn’t ask for control, he took it, dominating my mouth with swirls and plunges of his tongue. Unable to do anything else, I let him do as he wanted. He lowered his hand and cupped my ass.

This kiss was different—one I ached for, one I dreamed about. Delicious and wild, sending me spiraling out of control. I latched onto his arms, holding him close, breathing him in as he ravaged my lips. The scent of cinnamon and cloves was like coming home, sweet yet earthy, everything I’d missed. The world seemed to settle into place when I was in his arms, coming together as though we’d never been apart. I knew we had an audience, but I didn’t care, riding waves of untainted and pure emotion.

Disco didn’t lift his head as Paine had, shifting a fraction of an inch so I could feel his breath on my face. He gazed into my eyes, the heat from one simple look powerful enough to make my knees weak.

“I’ll be back soon,” he said softly and leaned in, nipping my bottom lip playfully, causing me to shudder.

When he let me go, I stayed in exactly the same place, arms loose at my sides.

It wasn’t the words spoken aloud that had me gasping for air, or the kiss that had scattered my thoughts. It was the words he’d spoken in my mind that echoed over and over in my head, a warning if ever I’d heard one.

“You belong to me, Rhiannon. You belong to me.”

Phew! Is it getting hot in here?  All the attention Rhiannon is getting from Disco and Paine?  I CANNOT WAIT to read this!  This is definitely in my top highly anticipated releases for the year.  Whether you love Disco or Paine or both (raises hand), this is bound to be a roller coaster of a ride and I can't wait to see where Jamie takes us!

Review: A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison
My Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth--a would-be creator is determined to make his (or her) own demons. But it can't be done without Rachel's blood. - GoodReads

The Hollows series by Kim Harrison has been a must read for me for the last 8 years. She introduced me to the world of Urban Fantasy which resulted in opening the doors to Paranormal, Dystopian etc. etc. I was torn on what rating I wanted to give this book as my love and respect for her books should have immediately rated it 4+ stars. However, I settled on 3 1/2 for the following reason: The 2nd half of this book is fantastic. Easily 4 1/2-5 stars. Unfortunately, the 1st half is about 2 stars and I found myself wanting to put the book down so I could go into the other room and watch paint dry.
tired gif Pictures, Images and Photos

I won't go deeply into the plot as this is the 10th book in the series and most people reading this review will be Hollows aficionados and will know where Rachel left off in Pale Demon. The book starts a few months after that book and Rachel is wallowing in self-pity because of what happened to Trent, Al and well, just about everyone else. She has chosen to wear a charm bracelet to keep her from tapping a ley-line, ergo, keeping Al from knowing she is still alive. The Rachel Morgan Pity Party is in full swing and I caught myself putting my adoration for this character aside and wishing she would GET THE FUCK OVER IT.  Unfortunately, a by-product of this storyline is the ommitance of several of the things that make this series so awesome, namely, AL, ley-lines, AL, The Everafter, Oh, AND AL  .....
Fortunately, her resident pixie, Jenks, manages to save the first half of the book with the following lines:

"Tinks tampons, Rachel, let's gooooo."

"...They came at 4:30 in the morning, strung the guy up, finger-painted from blood in a bag, and left in a blue car. A guy with a dog found him 37 minutes later and the I.S. flunky responding hit him with a forget charm and sent him on his way. He's fine but the dog is going to need MASSIVE amounts of therapy.."
...and about a dozen more quips that make Jenks so entertaining. I equate him to a chihuahua who thinks he's a great dane.

Trent makes a brief appearance in the first half of the book but makes up for it in the second half, appearing in all-black and driving his fancy cars and of course, rescuing Rachel with his adorable elf magic. *sighhhhh*      Trent and Rachel continue to ignore what they feel for eachother but I have a theory on how this will play out  (see below).

Finally, AL (Algariept) makes an appearance at the end of the book but fans of this book SHOULD NOT have to wait 294 pages to hear Al say"Hello, Rachel Mariana Morgan."

A Perfect Blood seemed more like a transition book to me. Almost like Ms. Harrison is setting us up for something big. She has announced that there are only 2 books left in the series (sniff, sniff). I have a theory that the next book will be about Al and Rachel and an eventual hook-up between the two. Trent will find this out and realize his true feelings for Rachel which will be the main storyline of the last book.(fingers crossed).

I still enjoyed this book and will eagerly anticipate February for the next installment of this fantastic series and I'll mirror the wise words of our dear Algariept..... " Welcome back, Itchy Witch,"

Review: Darkest Caress by Kaylea Cross

Darkest Caress by Kaylea Cross

Available April 23rd, 2012 by Carina Press

My rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Two-hundred-year-old Daegan Blackwell is one of the last remaining Empowered, an ancient magical race. Daegan's duty is to lead and protect his remaining Brethren in the coming war foretold by prophecy. The last thing he expects is to meet the one woman who will either save or destroy him-his destined mate.

Fiercely independent Realtor Olivia Farrell believes darkly handsome Daegan is simply a prospective client. Until she's attacked by a man with a strange aura-and Daegan fights him off, taking away her pain with just his touch. At first, Olivia refuses to believe she's part of a magical race, yet mounting evidence and her powerful chemistry with Daegan are too strong to deny.

But as Daegan's partner, Olivia becomes a target in the battle between good and evil that threatens her life, as well as the very existence of the Empowered. And the only one who can save her is the man claiming to be her destiny...

The Darkest Caress is the first in the Empowered series by Kaylea Cross.  We are introduced to Olivia “Liv” Farrell as she is on her way to show a house that’s new on the market.  Liv is a realtor but also teaches piano from her home.  Fighting off the mother of all migraines, she gets to the house and meets the mysterious Daegan Blackwell.

Ice blue eyes speared hers.  He was tall, over six feet, broad-shouldered.  His dark brown hair was cut short, the strong planes of his face clean-shaven.  He looked to be in his mid to late thirties, the swells of muscle beneath his snug black dress shirt telling her he kept in very good shape.

So she’s trying to show him the place but is too easily distracted with how attractive he is.  She goes home that night and starts having erotic dreams starring Daegan.  She ends up showing him the house again later that morning.  After an impromptu breakfast and showing, he asks her out to dinner later that night.

From here it moves pretty fast.  From the book description we can tell they are destined to be mated.  That’s easy enough for Daegan since he grew up amongst the Empowered, he knows what the bonding process involves.  OK, maybe not easy, there may have been a few cold showers involved, but Liv has no idea what is happening.  She learns there's more to her heritage then she could possibly imagine and prophecies she may be a part of.  Add to that the idea of mating for life with somebody she just met, regardless of how ridiculously good looking he is, she’s had her world turned upside down.

I like Liv.  She’s a strong lead character and though she’s thrown into this whole situation, she has a strong backbone and can hold her own.  Daegan is sweet and sexy.  He goes out of his way to give Liv a choice though it physically pains him to do so.  We can see right away that he truly cares for her, destined mates or not, he has her safety and happiness in mind.

There are two side characters of note: Cade and Vaughn.  Vaughn is a character with a tortured past.  His “skill” is quite extraordinary and Kaylea does a wonderful job with descriptions.  He does not leave me with a warm, fuzzy feeling but has a compassionate side that is barely touched upon in this first installment.  Cade is your typical love them and leave them type, albeit leaving them thoroughly satisfied.  The groundwork in this book to set-up the next book is very prevalent with his character.

I loved the idea of the prophecy.  I really liked the mythology involved.  It’s a different angle then I have read before and really appreciate the uniqueness of it.  I enjoyed this book but have to give warning: the end is not really much of an ending.  Issues were resolved involving Liv and Daegan and the current bad guys but this series involves war.  The war prophecy has only just begun and the end of this book gives us a peek of what’s up ahead for them.  I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger though.  I just hope that this book garners enough attention that the author will continue because now I need more.

Friday Favorites

This is a post started by Sue over at Satin's Bookish Corner.
We'll gush and  fawn over our most beloved characters out of our absolute favorite books.
If any of you who run blogs would like to join in and do a post on your blogs with your favourite book people let us know and we'll leave a link at the bottom of each post every week telling our followers to pop on over and check it out. and at the end of your post if you could do the same for us.

I just finished the latest in one of my favorite series, The Perfect Blood (The Hollows). For anyone who reads these books you are more than familiar with Trent Kalamack. Trent is an elf. The protagonist, Rachel, has had an ongoing love/hate relationship with Trent for the last 10 books but they have yet to seal the deal. Trent is a very successful businessman and doesn't have time for silliness or flighty women which makes his ongoing "relationship" with Rachel very entertaining. My hope is that these two will eventually end up together but in the mean time, enjoy the sights:
